Network Abuse and Security Definitions

Abuse is defined as: Spam, Threats and/or Harassment, Privacy Issues, Redistribution of Services (ftp, www, etc.), Copyright Issues, and Trademark Issues, Hacking, Port Scanning, Spreading Virus', Denial of Service Attacks, Password Cracking, and Unauthorized Access, Credit Card Fraud, Product/Service Fraud, Financial Solicitation, Make Money Fast Chain Letters, General Fraud, or Theft.

Open Relay: Many times when building a mail server, the administrator over looks the "Open Relay". By having "Open Relay", you're allowing SPAMMERS to use your mail server to send out mass amounts of mail.

Many times the administrator is oblivious to what's going on until there is a SPAM Complaint from a third party. By this time it's too late and your server is listed on the Blacklist. You'll start to hear complaints about not being able to send mail to certain domains....

Like many other established ISPs, Telepacific subscribes to ORDB (Open Relay Database) so we can limit the amount of spam going to our mail servers and therefore our customers. If your mail server is listed on this Blacklist, a third party SPAM Complaint was made to ORDB.ORG. ORDB.ORG first scans the mail server in question to make sure the complaint is legitimate.

Once listed, your mail will start bouncing back from organizations subscribing to ORDB.ORG. You as the administrator must close "Open Relay" on your mail server and notify ORDB.ORG. Please go to their website (www.ordb.org) and click on "Remove an Open Relay" and follow the instructions.

By closing "Open Relay", you will benefit by not having to hear complaints from users, having faster internet access (bandwidth), mail server uses less resources,... and the list goes on. As you can see the benefits far out weigh the trouble of closing up your mail server. Also as an ISP we must uphold our customers to certain standards or Internet Etiquette and if certain rules are not followed both the customer and the ISP can receive a severe backlashing from the Internet Community.

Please make sure your email server is secure and closed for "Open Relay" before you put it online.
